The San Antonio-based grocer is opening its doors on Wednesday in the northern part of the city. The new site covers more than 130,000 square feet and employs over 550 people, according to the company.
Prosper — even for North Texas — is growing quickly. In 2010, it had less than 10,000, according to the U.S. Census. By 2020, the population had more than tripled, and it was approaching 35,000 in 2023.
H-E-B, competing with such rivals as Kroger and Walmart, has pushed into many of the expanding parts of Dallas-Fort Worth with sites in cities such as Frisco, McKinney and Plano. It‘s made other moves, including plans for another store in Denton. The company also bought land in Sherman and in Flower Mound.
“Growth is definitely something that’s attractive,” said Juan-Carlos Ruck, H-E-B executive vice president.
The store itself sits at the intersection of Frontier Parkway and the Dallas North Tollway, near Prosper High School. The new site also is close to Celina — and can draw far beyond Prosper, Ruck said.
While this is the first H-E-B for Prosper, one of the stores in Frisco sits nearby on the south side of 380.
The site, given local demographics, has tailored some of its products to appeal to the Indian community, Ruck said. That includes specialty options with yogurt and roti, a type of bread.
