A more than 500,000-acre New Mexico ranch owned by the family of Dallas-Fort Worth homebuilding giant D.R. Horton has just sold.
The Great Western Ranch, a property spanning more than 790 square miles on the Arizona border, changed hands for an undisclosed price.
The property was put on the market for $142 million in 2024. At the time of the July 30 sale, the asking price had been reduced to $115 million.
It is one of the largest ranches in the country. The property is roughly 76% the size of Rhode Island. The identity of the buyer has not been made public.
The sale was first reported by The Wall Street Journal’s Mansion Global. The listing was handled by Jeff Buerger, a real estate partner at Hall and Hall. The buyer was represented by Dax Hayden, managing partner of Hayden Outdoors Real Estate.
Messages to the Horton family were not returned before publication.
Over the last decade, the Horton family combined three properties to create the Great Western Ranch. The first parcel, purchased in 2014, was 293,000 acres, Mansion Global reports.
According to the listing, Great Western Ranch includes eight residences, agricultural outbuildings, equipment shops, hay barns, storage shops, offices, corrals, pens and livestock facilities. There are also 86 wells and hundreds of small ponds and lakes.
The property could support one of the largest livestock operations in the country. Roughly 1,900 cow/calf pairs are currently being run on the ranch.
The ranch also serves as a commercial hunting destination. That area of New Mexico is known for its bull elk, mule deer, antelope and mountain lions. The ranch participates in a lucrative lease arrangement with Black Mountain Outfitters.
More than 276,000 acres of the property are leased to various state and federal entities, according to the listing.
The property has historical and archaeological sites that include Anasazi petroglyphs, ruins, and the tumbled-down stone homes and corrals of New Mexico’s earliest homesteaders.
Donald R. Horton, the founder of the Arlington-based hombuilding firm that bears his name, died in May 2024 at the age of 74. The property was placed on the market following his death.
